Documentations of Learning

These are a couple of Josh's worksheets from school.

In the first one, Josh was asked to draw faces that reflect certain feelings / emotions.

Documentation of Learning:  Silly Stories
Note to families:  In this activity children made a silly sentence story by putting together words that describe objects and the name of an animal.  This activity gave them experience in combining words in new and interesting ways (which is important in literacy development).  It also developed small motor skills as they wrote their words and drew their pictures.  (You can click on the image below to view it in its original size.)

Not a Drawing

I asked Josh to go draw something, because he was feeling a bit restless and I wanted to finish copying down a couple of recipes that I wanted to try this weekend. Minutes later, this is what he came back with...

Me: What a nice drawing, Josh. Such lovely colors.
Josh: It's not a drawing, Mom. It's a map!
Me: Who's this on your map (pointing to the "face").
Josh: (Exasperated sigh) That's an apple tree, Mom!

I asked him to tell me about each item in his drawing, so there won't be any more confusion.

Here it is again... without my annoying notes.

Chalk Painting

This is what Josh brought home from school today. He says that it's a "chalk painting." I love it that they expose the kids to different art materials.

Josh at the Beach

Josh came home with this drawing that he made at school today.  He says that it's him in the drawing when he went to the beach.  There was rain and there was sunshine, too --hence, the rainbow, he said.  The little yellow thing in the middle is the "banana and watermelon inside my bag."  The little blue downward strokes are "rain."

Duck Duck Goose

I don't know what it is or how this came to be, but Josh has been really into drawing "instruction sheets" (see the one he made for Chess) and maps. Here is another one that he made for Duck Duck Goose.
